Black Youth Justice Forum

The National Association for Youth Justice announced the formation of the Black Youth Justice Forum at it's conference today held at Harper Adams College in Shropshire.

Ellie Roy, Chief Executive of the Youth Justice Board, who was also speaking at the conference called it " an immensly welcome and timely initiative".

This step has been taken because the NAYJ is committed to ensuring justice for all children in trouble and campaigns against the injustices in the system.

The dictionary definition of justice is the "quality of being just, fair and equitable". However, we are aware that many people do not experience this 'just, fair and equitable' service. The constitution of NAYJ says that we will 'promote anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice throughout the youth justice system' and our manifesto contains a commitment for 'the promotion of policies and practice to end discrimination against black children, other ethnic minority children and other socially disadvantaged children throughout the youth justice system.Because concerns about the continued over-representation of black children in the youth Justice system, and the issues that black staff can face, the Black Youth Justice Forum is being established to focus the debate and provide a forum for practitioners to share concerns and issues. The Forum will:

Share information to promote informed practice

Develop links to related bodies

Give practitioners a voice within NAYJ campaigning

Enable all practitioners to share issues, concerns and good practice

Provide a safe and supportive environment to enable honest and open debate.

To make further enquiries about the forum, please contact any o?ne of the committee members below.
