Developing a Youth Justice Fit for Purpose

This major event in the youth justice calendar builds on the theme of the successful 2006 NAYJ conference by focusing on effective policy and practice across the youth justice and crime prevention arenas.

The conference provides the opportunity for policy makers, managers, practitioners and volunteers to critically explore the challenges of developing a youth justice fit for purpose.

Prevention of youth crime remains a key priority of the YJB and as initiatives have developed they have impacted on a range of services working with children and young people. Similarly, developing high quality community supervision and reducing the rate of custody also remain key concerns.

This year, delegates will have an option to follow themed streams through the workshop sessions that reflect the key areas of youth justice practice and policy. These are:

• Prevention and pre court services
• Community sentences and supervision
• Custody

The conference will provide a range of quality speakers analysing these issues and a comprehensive collection of interactive workshops offers the opportunity to reflect on recent developments and new legislation.

In addition, the conference will provide a forum for HM Chief Inspectors to discuss findings at the end of four years of YOT inspections.

The conference coincides with the publication of the 2007 report and will provide an important platform for its dissemination.
